Kent has a new Sheriff…

We would like to extend our congratulations to Martin Lakehurst, Minerva Chairman, who became the new High Sheriff of Kent recently.

Martin was appointed to this historic role during a ceremony at Rochester Cathedral on Saturday, April 18th, attended by more than 250 guests from across the county. The appointment of a High Sheriff is one of the oldest secular offices in the country, dating back over 1,000 years, and remains an important and respected position within the county today.

The role of High Sheriff is centred around supporting and championing those who work to uphold law and order across Kent. This includes both voluntary and statutory organisations, with particular interest in the work of the emergency services, the prison and probation services, and community safety initiatives.

Under the Criminal Law Act 1826, the High Sheriff has the authority to recognise and award individuals who, in the opinion of judges at a criminal trial, have played a significant role in the apprehension of offenders. In addition, the High Sheriff of Kent presents annual awards to individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities. The position also serves as an ex officio trustee of the Kent People’s Trust, an independent crime prevention charity dedicated to improving community safety across the county.

Martin was sworn in by Lord Reed, President of the Supreme Court, and succeeds Jonathon Meame, who served as High Sheriff of Kent for the previous year. Martin will serve in the role for the next 12 months until his successor is appointed.

Speaking about his appointment, Martin said:
“It was a great honour to be invited to take on the role. Being Kentish through and through, it is something I have always wanted to do as a way of giving back to the community. I’m looking forward to meeting the many people and organisations who work tirelessly to keep Kent safe and to recognising the incredible efforts that often go unseen.”

Martin has already begun attending engagements across the county and is keen to use his year in office to raise awareness of the work being done behind the scenes to support justice, safety and community wellbeing. We wish him every success during his year as High Sheriff and look forward to seeing the positive impact he will undoubtedly make across Kent.
